Power System: Operational and Market Security
14 August marks Power Engineers’ Day – a celebration of the people whose work enables the power system to operate safely, reliably and efficiently every day.
On this occasion, the team behind the Power System: Operational and Market Security – SEBOR Conference extends its warmest wishes to all energy professionals: may your work bring you satisfaction, professional and academic success, safe working conditions in your daily duties, and the energy and motivation to take on new challenges.
We would also like to thank everyone involved in the generation, transmission, distribution and use of energy – engineers, system operators, dispatchers, electrical fitters, technicians, researchers, designers, analysts, energy market experts and representatives of the many other professions that make up the modern energy sector.
The first Power Engineers’ Day was established in Poland in 1956. Interestingly, it was not originally celebrated on 14 August. Until 1972, the celebration took place on 1 September, while between 1973 and 1990 it was held on the first Sunday of September.
The current date dates back to 1991, when St Maximilian Maria Kolbe was proclaimed the patron saint of energy professionals. Since then, Power Engineers’ Day has been celebrated on 14 August.
This means that 2026 marks 70 years since this industry celebration was first established.
Working in the energy sector has always involved a high degree of responsibility. Today, however, the range of challenges facing the industry is exceptionally broad.
The energy transition requires us to ensure security of energy supply while simultaneously modernising and expanding networks, integrating an increasing number of distributed generation sources and energy storage facilities, improving system flexibility, developing new technologies and responding to cybersecurity threats.
At the same time, the sector is facing changes in the energy market, new regulations, the development of nuclear power and local energy communities. As a result, modern power engineering increasingly brings together engineering, information technology, automation, economics, law and science.
And this is precisely why, regardless of the level of automation, people – their knowledge, experience and sense of responsibility – remain the most important element of the system.
These issues are also at the heart of the SEBOR Scientific and Technical Conference.
Power system security and resilience, the integration of renewable energy sources and energy storage, flexibility and balancing, network development, cybersecurity, nuclear power, and changing market and regulatory conditions are among the topics we want to discuss during the next edition of the conference.
Above all, SEBOR is a meeting place for people representing different areas of the sector – academia, system operators, energy companies, public administration, technology providers and market participants. It is the exchange of knowledge and experience between these communities that helps us respond more effectively to the challenges facing today’s power system.
On the occasion of Power Engineers’ Day, we wish everyone working in the sector, above all, safe working conditions, reliability – not only of the system – ambitious projects, sound decisions, professional fulfilment and every success in your personal life.
May the changes taking place across the energy sector create new opportunities, and may the knowledge and experience of Polish energy professionals continue to form the foundation for the safe development of the power system.
Happy Power Engineers’ Day! ⚡
